Breaking Taboos and Reaching 100K Downloads: The Journey and Future of the Masturbation Tracker App "Ei Nano"
“Building an app about sex”—just saying that out loud can make some people raise their eyebrows. Apps dealing with sexuality often receive mixed reactions and strong opinions due to their nature. Still, I’ve always believed this space holds potential to help people in meaningful ways. That belief led me to quietly, carefully, and seriously develop Ei Nano—an app for tracking masturbation.

The idea of “quantifying and visualizing masturbation habits” first came to me in 2018. I started development with that concept, making steady improvements along the way. Over time, more users joined, and by the end of 2024, the app had surpassed 100,000 downloads. I felt genuinely grateful and deeply moved as a developer. It was one of the proudest milestones of my career.
From the beginning, my goal was to help users recognize patterns in their libido and emotional state by tracking their sexual urges. This article shares the thoughts, experiences, and motivations behind Ei Nano. While challenges remain, I’ll continue refining the app with the hope of helping people better understand their sexuality—at their own pace, without comparison to others.
Making Sexuality an Open Conversation
Some might wonder, “Isn’t the developer embarrassed to be working on an app that tracks masturbation?” Honestly, I’ve never felt that shame or hesitation around discussing sexuality openly.
For example, back in elementary school, I remember feeling a sense of envy toward classmates who had already hit puberty—I actually looked forward to experiencing it myself. Once I began masturbating, I didn’t keep it a secret. I spoke about it casually with classmates, and I couldn't understand why others would deny it out of embarrassment.
Even today, I have no issue talking openly about my sexual experiences—when, what I watched, what I did. For me, sexuality is one of the most natural parts of being human. It’s something we should be able to talk about more freely.
The Personal Motivation Behind Development
The development of Ei Nano began from a personal question and years of observation.
It’s commonly said that male libido peaks in the early twenties. But during that time, I wasn’t particularly interested in sex. My sex drive was low. Oddly enough, it was only after I entered my thirties that my libido gradually increased. I even began to feel the frustration that partners in my past had expressed about our sex life.
Looking back, I realize I was mentally overwhelmed by school and work in my younger years. As life settled down in my thirties, my mind also calmed—and my libido increased.
That realization led me to start tracking my own patterns. I wanted to objectively understand whether my masturbation habits were “normal” or not. So in 2018, I created Ei Nano, a tool for recording and visualizing libido through masturbation frequency.
Understanding Libido Through a “Frequency Index”
To represent masturbation frequency, Ei Nano uses a metric called the “Index.” The idea came from a radio show where a guest explained, “If you masturbate 7 times a week, your index is 1.00.” The guest argued that even after turning 40, aiming to maintain an index of 1.00 was important for physical and mental health.
I was inspired by this concept and adapted it into a functional app. Over time, the Index evolved into a personal wellness metric for users.
There’s also scientific backing for this. A Harvard study found that men who ejaculate more than 21 times per month have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. That translates to an index of 0.72 in the app. Based on that number, Ei Nano generates a “Biorhythm” line graph that lets users visually track their libido cycles.
By using this index, users can manage masturbation frequency while referencing health indicators. The visual data isn’t just a log—it’s a unique measure of mental and physical balance.
That said, I’m not a medical professional, so I can’t offer clinical advice or official guidelines about appropriate masturbation frequency. However, I’d love to integrate expert insights into future features—such as personalized reminders based on a user’s own trends. But for now, that kind of implementation remains out of reach.
Battling “Obscene” Labels from Platforms
Throughout the app’s life, Ei Nano has been repeatedly removed from Google Play. It’s been flagged as “obscene” because of its sexual nature. Content related to sex faces intense scrutiny on app platforms and comes with heavy restrictions around monetization. Ads are often denied outright, making it incredibly tough to stay afloat in this space.
Right now, the app survives in the store only by avoiding direct language and emphasizing its role as a wellness or journaling app. That strategy helps dodge bans, but it’s far from ideal. Some users even tell me, “Just call it what it is—masturbation!” I get where they’re coming from, but I’m stuck choosing what will actually pass platform review, not what’s most transparent.
I’ve run into similar roadblocks with Apple. There are plenty of “sex tracker” apps out there, so my app was initially rejected for “not offering anything unique.” But I kept emphasizing that Ei Nano focuses specifically on masturbation and includes distinctive features like the Index and Biorhythm graph. After over a month of back-and-forth, the app was finally approved. Honestly, I almost gave up.
And yet, by the end of 2024, we hit 100,000 downloads. That number tells me that many people truly see value in what Ei Nano offers. I’m beyond grateful.
How Feedback from Women Shaped the App
Ei Nano has evolved far beyond the original idea from 2018, largely thanks to feedback from female users. At first, the app was just a personal tracking tool. But as more women began using it, they started sharing feature requests.
Some asked for period tracking. Others explained that orgasms can occur multiple times during a single session. Some wanted the design to feel softer and more approachable. I took these voices seriously and gradually expanded the app’s capabilities—adding features like period logging, ovulation prediction, multi-orgasm support, and customizable themes.
Interestingly, the decision to avoid the word “masturbation” in early versions actually made the app more approachable for many women. Today, a growing number of women use Ei Nano to explore and understand their sexuality in a comfortable and personal way.
The Social Significance of Challenging Taboos
Since Ei Nano deals with a socially taboo topic—tracking masturbation—people occasionally ask about its "social value." But to be honest, I didn’t start this project with a big mission in mind. It was a personal project I built for myself.
That said, there are major companies offering services focused on sex or masturbation. If one of those companies were to seriously develop an app like Ei Nano, collecting and analyzing large-scale data, I do believe it could have great social impact. Based on patterns in individual sexual behavior, we might one day offer meaningful health insights—or even detect early signs of physical or mental issues.
As far as I know, no company is doing this yet. That’s exactly why I hope someone will take up the challenge. If that happens, Ei Nano may not be able to compete, but I’d be genuinely excited to see it happen.
Tracking Libido to Deepen Self-Understanding
Ei Nano is a helpful tool for anyone curious about changes in their sex drive or masturbation habits.
Understanding your sexuality isn’t just about satisfying curiosity—it can lead to important personal insights. By recording fluctuations in libido, you begin to see clear connections between your sexual desire and your mental health or daily stress levels, which are often easy to overlook.
In my own case, lower libido often coincided with stressful periods at work or difficult personal situations. Keeping daily records helped me look back and realize, “Yeah, that was a really tough time.” On the flip side, during times when I felt mentally and physically well, the app’s index would reflect that too. Seeing that data helped me reconnect with the positive version of myself from that time—and it was surprisingly uplifting.
Sexual desire is closely linked to both mental health and biological cycles. Over time, tracking these changes allows you to reflect on and even enjoy the patterns. By using this app, you can gain a deeper understanding of your libido and overall mind-body balance, potentially reshaping how you view your sexuality.
Ei Nano was born from my own experiences and curiosity. It’s shown me that tracking libido isn’t just about collecting numbers—it can be a powerful way to deepen self-awareness. If this message resonates even a little, and inspires something in you, that would mean a lot to me.
I plan to keep evolving the app based on user feedback, making it more intuitive and insightful. I believe that facing sexuality honestly can add richness to everyday life. Please give Ei Nano a try—and I’d love to hear what you think.
